Non Genetic Risks Of Getting Alzheimers

Non-genetic risk factors include a range of diverse factors, including age, diet, weight, blood pressure, heart disease, cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, hormone replacement therapy, head trauma history, education level and eating metals to mention a few!

Age isn’t something we can do much about but as we age things change in the brain and these changes increase the risk of developing dementia. All the health related issues I mentioned in the first paragraph have been linked to Alzheimer’s in one way or another and if you have any of them on your medical history, it is fair to say that you have a higher risk of getting dementia or Alzheimer’s than someone that do not have diabetes, are not overweight, do not have heart disease, have a healthy level of cholesterol and have normal blood pressure.

Eating metals is a worrying risk factor. This refers to Aluminum typically found in pots and pans and Zink. Aluminum is in general a bad idea in cookware and if you have one, get rid of it, as it is posing a significant risk to your health. Zink is a little less clear as they have found evidence of too low Zink levels in certain parts of the brain in some Alzheimer’s patients. It has also been suggested that too much Zink is a bad thing too, and the solution seems to be to consider detox diets and diets high in fruit and fiber to at least help clear out some of the metal before it gets absorbed in your system permanently.

Smoking also have a link to Alzheimer’s which should provide any smoker with ample inspiration to quit.
